According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, 42% of children are obese or overweight, posing a serious and long-term public health risk. These trends are particularly acute in low-income, high-minority communities which regularly lack safe outdoor play space and recreational facilities. Unfortunately, with many Los Angeles schools facing meager physical education budgets, teachers can rarely compensate for the fitness resources their neighborhoods lack.

UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind seeks to address the growing obesity epidemic among Los Angeles adolescents by promoting healthy lifestyle choices and the self-confidence needed to sustain them. To this end, UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind provides state-of-the-art fitness centers to middle and high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District along with an innovative curriculum designed to help students develop confidence and competence in a variety of physical activities.

The ultimate goal of UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind is to ensure that every student in Los Angeles has the opportunity, knowledge and appropriate tools to pursue a healthy lifestyle through physical fitness. The equipment in our workout facilities is varied and plentiful enough to be accessible to all students and to keep large classes engaged.

To date, UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind has installed 95 state-of-the-art fitness centers in Los Angeles Schools, impacting over 92,000 Angeleno students annually. In addition, some UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind centers serve their local communities outside school hours.
