What is resilience?

Adventure Sessions:
There will be two 15-minute interactive adventure sessions prior to the presentations
(separate ticket required).

Virtual Reality
Experience virtual reality and how it can be used to treat anhedonic symptoms in individuals with elevated levels of stress, anxiety, or depression. Anhedonia—inability to feel pleasure and loss of desire to experience pleasurable activities—is a common and debilitating symptom of anxiety and depression. Clinicians have had success in treating anhedonia by encouraging patients to envision rewarding events and recounting them step-by-step. In severe cases, however, people might not be able to access positive experiences; and the cost of such behavioral therapy might be too high for some. The UCLA Anxiety and Depression Research Center, with help from the Depression Grand Challenge, has selected several positive virtual reality experiences and combined them with guided mindful recall in order to “train” patients to identify and seek positive experiences in their day-to-day lives. 

Mindful Awareness - Guided Meditation
The UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) will lead a guided meditation based on mindful awareness, which is defined as paying attention to present moment experiences with openness, curiosity, and willingness. Significant research has shown that mindfulness can help with difficult mental states, such as anxiety and depression; foster well-being; diminish emotional reactivity; and thicken the brain in the areas responsible for decision making, emotional flexibility, and empathy.
