Our 2026 Hall of Fame Class 

Del Chipman (1980) - Del Chipman's distinguished rugby career began unexpectedly at UCLA when legendary coach Dennis Storer recruited him directly off the intramural field, a path shared by many other great UCLA rugby players of that era. Despite having never played rugby before, Chipman's natural speed and agility quickly made him a valuable asset on the wing. He was a contemporary of many other UCLA greats, such as Skip Niebauer, and competed against formidable opponents of that generation, like Jack Clark.

Chipman’s rapid development and stellar performance earned him significant recognition. In 1976, he was selected to play for the US Eagle side in the inaugural match against Australia. He was also selected to play on a number of other representative sides, including All-Conference, All-Pacific Coast, and All-American teams.

The 1982 Team - The 1982 UCLA Men’s Rugby team had a highly successful season on the pitch in a pivotal year for the program. Three years post-Title IX, rugby had lost its pipeline of football players and the season proved to be the team’s last from within the athletic department.

Despite low expectations, the squad achieved an unblemished regular season and won the Southern California divisional title under the guidance of Steve Gray, a UCLA and USA Rugby Hall of Fame member. After dispensing of BYU in the opening round of the Pacific Coast RFU territorial playoffs at the Santa Barbara tournament, the team’s only loss was to Cal in the next round in a 16-6 defeat. The team included Hall of Famer Andrew Warne.

Legendary coach and Hall of Famer Dennis Storer said that it was the smallest team physically that he had seen in fifteen years and their results were a “minor triumph” which he attributed to “enthusiasm, fitness, quickness, hustle and intensity.” The team cements its position not merely as a successor to the legendary Storer era but as a vital bridge between the club’s rich heritage and the enduring excellence of one of our nation’s most decorated programs.
