UCLA Statistics UCLA Statistics

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, and Statistics Community,

Recently, we had a wonderful discussion at our department’s Diversity Town Hall. We are proud of the work we are doing and look forward to continuing to improve. Along these lines, we are pleased to share a new fundraising initiative, The Michael Tsiang Fund for Belonging in Statistics, is officially kicking off. One of our faculty members, Mike Tsiang, recalls always feeling a sense of belonging at UCLA and within our department, and recognizes that this isn't always the case for every person. Toward that end, he has envisioned a fund that will specifically create more community around the many groups that have been historically underrepresented in our community.

Below you'll find more specifics about what is envisioned. Mike has pledged a gift to help kickoff the venture and the leadership and faculty are personally donated and are very supportive of the effort. Please reach out to share your thoughts, lend your support, and let us know of others who might be interested in participating.

It is a priority for the Department of Statistics to create a space for underrepresented groups of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and allies to work and learn together. The Michael Tsiang Fund for Belonging in Statistics will help cover the costs of lectures, panel discussions, workshops, screenings, research, community outreach, and other activities that will help empower our community and educate all of us.

The Michael Tsiang Fund for Belonging in Statistics will:
  • Fund community inclusivity initiatives and student awards within the Statistics Department.
  • Be current use, and turn into an endowment when the fund reaches $100,000 in funds.
  • Be matched dollar for dollar by the Physical Sciences' Dean, if the $100,000 endowment level is reached before June 30, 2021.
  • Ensure that these efforts will remain at the forefront of the department’s priorities year after year.
  • Help kick start an intentional community for underrepresented people in Statistics.
  • Both gifts and pledges (which can be paid over up to five years) will count toward the total.
Please contact Joy Kruger at jkruger@support.ucla.edu to discuss details or to find out more.

I think this initiative perfectly encapsulates the sense of community and belonging that the Stats department is well-regarded for fostering, and appreciate the work that each of you do toward moving us toward an even more inclusive and equitable space.

Thank you and best wishes,

Hongquan Xu
